About Shelburne Voices
A Citizen Initiative for a Better Shelburne
Our Mission
Shelburne Voices is an independent, non-partisan platform created by residents of the Municipality of Shelburne, Nova Scotia. We believe that healthy local democracy depends on an informed citizenry — and that informed citizens need access to facts, context, and a place to make their voices heard.
Municipal government makes decisions that affect every aspect of daily life: the roads you drive, the taxes you pay, the services you rely on, and the long-term direction of your community. Yet municipal politics often receive the least scrutiny of any level of government. We are here to change that in Shelburne.
We do not advocate for any political party or candidate. We advocate for transparency, accountability, and the principle that residents deserve straight answers from their elected officials.
What We Stand For
Transparency
We publish the primary sources — FOIPOP documents, council minutes, budget data. We show our work so you can verify it yourself.
Accuracy
We don't publish claims we can't support. When we're uncertain, we say so. When we're wrong, we correct the record publicly.
Community First
This platform exists to serve the people of Shelburne, not any political party or candidate. We hold all elected officials to the same standard.
Open Records
We believe public institutions should function in public. We file FOIPOP requests, attend council meetings, and publish what we learn.
How We Operate
Shelburne Voices is run entirely by volunteers. We are not funded by any government body, political party, or corporate interest. Our operating costs are covered by donations from Shelburne residents who believe in the project.
We attend council meetings, file Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP) requests, review public records, and speak with residents across the municipality. When sources provide information it is always anonymously (with the exception of elected officials).
We are not a news organization in the traditional sense — we do not have journalists on staff. We are residents who care about our community and are willing to do the work to understand what our municipal government is actually doing.
